LIFTING LOCKDOWN: TIPS FROM A GP

A grassroots response borne out of tragedy within my community, Lifting Lockdown has snowballed into a movement. I felt there was an urgent need to convey a nuanced framework about how to integrate COVID-19 risk into our lives, particularly for vulnerable groups including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities who have been worse affected by the crisis. With backing from 8 different medical and dental associations and forewords from Dr Bob Gill, GP and NHS campaigner and Professor Dame Donna Kinnair, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, this guide has gone on to be widely shared and positively received. An abridged guide is now available and translations are underway.

I am collaborating with a team of linguistic experts from Kings College London to create videos of the guide to target oral language communities who are being missed by current written communication.

Locally, it is forming the basis for a social prescribing project pilot where advocates from minority groups will be trained in the principles of the guide, enabling them to have the resources to directly mediate these principles to high risk individuals in the community.

What exactly is sleep? And how do we get a good night's sleep? Given that we spend a whopping one third of our lives asleep, it's no wonder that it shapes our waking moments as much as our resting ones: poor sleep is one of the commonest concerns we see in clinic.
